Message from Staffordshire Moorlands Athletic Club
regarding the last fixture at Westwood High School
This year there will be no parking for competitors available in the college grounds.
The main entrance for the changing rooms and the race is on the bend at the highest point of Westwood Park Avenue. The closest streets to park in are Westwood Park Avenue, Valley Drive or Warrington Drive. Please don’t block residents’ driveways. Otherwise we’ll be banned from the venue in future years.
For race officials and those who are bringing the club tents, we should be able to find room for you in the small car park at the Westwood Park Avenue entrance – it will save you unnecessary struggling with your load.
A special request from Staffordshire Moorlands Athletics Club and the Head of Westwood College - Please avoid trampling mud into the school changing rooms and hall and don’t block the drains by cleaning your running shoes in the school. Do that at home. Thank you!
3rd Race - Stafford Common
The third race of the series was our home course on Stafford Common. Unfortunately the cows were still in the top field which meant that the course had to be changed at the last minute. It was another good turn out from the Harriers with the Ladies making another step up the league into 4th Place.
The Gents are still finding this league quite tough and remain in 10th place.

1st Race - Winsford, Cheshire
The first fixture was a new venue hosted by Vale Royal AC, at Winsford, Cheshire. It was a fresh sunny day and the ground was firm underfoot. If you like to run cross country races to enjoy the
rugged terrain and get a mud pack treatment for your skin, this was not the course for you, it was somewhat uninspiring consisting of laps around a sportsfield; 2 for the ladies and 4 for the
men.
It was great to see some new faces making their cross country debuts for the Harriers with Sarah Brookes and Denise Rogers in the ladies team; Mark Bridgewood, Ian Talbot, Tom Rogers, Bryan Dale and
a never before seen appearance from Bill Whitworth in the mens team.
The ever present Chris Skellern was first counter for the ladies, Steve Vaughan started the season in good form to lead the mens team home, a great effort from all who ran.
In the Ladies race 121 finished. The team is currently 6th of 11 in Division 2.
In the mens race 218 finished. The team is currently 10th of 10 in Division 1.
If any other Harriers would like join in the fun, all are welcome at the next race at Parkhall on 6/11/10. Tracey Gee
Season's Overall Placings 2009 season
The Senior Ladies team finished 3rd team overall from 9 Clubs who managed a full team in all four races and just missed promotion to Division 1 by 20 points.
However, they proved to be the 2nd best group of Over 35’s, beaten onlyby Trentham RC
The Mens team finished 8th team overall in Division 1, from the 9 teams that managed a full team turnout over all four League races.
However, they should avoid relegation to Division 2 because there were other teams that failed to get a full team out on four occasions.
The more senior members of the Club did manage to get the runners-up place in the Over 50’s category.
On an individual runner basis our best placed male runner was George Mafu who came 29th out of 103 completing all 4 races.
Nina Skilton came 7th overall from 48 Ladies who ran all 4 races and 2nd in the LV40 group.
Chris Skellern was 15th overall and 2nd in the LV45 group.
In the Vets 45 group, Chris finished 9th, Steve Turner 13th and Stuart Fowlie 16th from the 16 in the group that ran all 4 races.
Paul Douglas was winner (from 11) in the Vets 55 group and was higher in the field in all four races than the 2nd Vets 50.
Peter Sarson winner (from 16) in th e Vets 60 group and would have been 3rd man over 50 if he had not been tripped at the Stafford race.
4th race - Westlands School, Leek
A good turnout of male (22) and lady Harriers (11).
A total of 238 men and 138 ladies finished in their respective races.
The mens team finished 5th of 10 teams in the 1st Division, on the day, and the ladies team finished 2nd out of 10 teams in the 2nd Division.
3rd Race - Stafford Common
Twelve Women ran, with the first 4 achieving 2nd Ladies team position in Division 4.
Unfortunately missing Sally Gray again, but very ably replaced by Claire Skelton (nee Newton).
A big welcome back Claire - you’re looking good and getting fit again.
Twenty-two Men ran, with the first 6 achieving 7th Team position in Division 1.
A best number of runners and best team position so far this year - thanks wholly to Russell Barron.
A great run Russell - hope you can make it to the 4th race, in December.
2nd Race - Park Hall, Longton
A strong turnout of Harriers for this race.
The course start was high on the hill at Park Hall and a chill wind blew, but at least it remained dry.
Eleven Lady Harriers raced and finished 6th team from the ten in Division 4.
Twenty Male Harriers raced, but could only make 9th team from 10 in Division 1.
A very strong run from George Mafu as usual, with the next 7 packing within a 5 minute gap.
1st Race - Lyme Valley, Newcastle
A record turnout of Harriers for a cross-country match - 14 ladies and 21 men !
It was great to see a large turnout of Harriers and Harriettes at Lyme Valley Park, Newcastle for the first cross-country races of this winter season.
Hope we can retain that interest through the winter.
And the weather acted accordingly, with cold, wind and rain for much of the afternoon.
The Senior men thought their luck was really in when it stopped raining and blowing and the sun came out for the start of their race.
BUT, just as the race leaders were finishing a major downfall of rain soaked most of the remaining runners (and the spectators of course).
Still, it was nice to cool down and the rain eased off again to a light drizzle before all the runners had finished.
