Stafford & District Schools Athletic Championships
Rowley Park 29th
June 2010
A
report from Ellie Baxter
On a hot evening I was
representing my school, Christchurch Middle School, Stone,
in the 1500mtrs.
I knew I was a slow finisher so I had to start off quite
fast and try and stay in front.
I opened up quite a big lead and by the final lap I was
about 50mtrs in front. I kept my lead for 1450mtrs before
eventually being passed, I was really tired because of the
heat and also I am not used to running races on the track.
I finished 2nd in a time of 6.09, thirty seconds faster
than my previous best time. Elisha Walker, from the
Harriers finished in third.
I really enjoyed the race, but was a little sad not to win
it; but I think I can still do a lot better with more
practice.
A report
from Ellie Stanyer
The nerves built up at
school, I was only half there. All day I was thinking what
if I won? What if I really won? What would it feel like?
Would I fall over again?
At the stadium I was getting myself worked up, I couldn't
sit still. "Nerves are good," My confident Mum told me.
Though somehow I had convinced myself that I NEVER wanted
to do another race EVER again. I spoke to Ellie B before
the race she told me that I would be fine and gave me a
quick hug. It seemed like an eternity before I was on the
start line (fourth lane) and when I was I just wanted to be
off it again.
"On your marks, get set, GO!" The man shouted as the
clacker closed. Suddenly I was off, sprinting around the
corner. The wind was in my favour and soon I was crawling
up positions. I couldn't hear anyone behind me, but I
didn't dare look back. "Stanyer! Stanyer!" I heard being
chanted from the Leasowes stand. I kept sprinting and
sprinting long past the line, making sure that I was into
the next heat.
The people at the desk asked for my name and school. "Ellie
Stanyer from Leasowes," I proudly declared . People from
other schools were talking to me all the way back up to the
start line for the final, I wasn't listening just nodding
here and there. I had to beat them. I just had to.
"Ellie, Ellie!" Leasowes were chanting.
I rushed on from the crowd and tried to get an outside
lane. However the man just put me in fourth again. This
time when the clacker went I was looking forward to it. I
sprinted around the corner, this time I was aware of people
behind me. Coming in to the straight I had a battle, she
was just behind me. Slowly creeping up. I gave a last
spurt, and crossed the line. . . in first place!
On the podium I couldn't quite believe I had won. As I
stood there on the podium, the man asked me if I ran for a
club. "Yes, Stafford Harriers..."

Cheadle 5 Junior Run - 7
March
Three Juniors
entered the Cheadle Fun Run which was 2 laps at the
rear of the school.
There was a huge range of ages and our 3 Junior Harriers
found it a bit tough against much older children.
The course was a little narrow and a bit short to really
get going.
However they had a great run with Elisha Walker
leading the Harriettes home with Ellie and Millie Stanyer
close behind.
They were very pleased with their medals and there were
quite a few freebies being given out as well!

Midland Area Cross
Country Championships 30/1/10
This year the
Championships were held on our home course on Stafford
Common. This is next only to a National Championship in
importance and many International juniors were taking part.
It was a grest chance for the Harriers to see what a major
Championship is like and to run full Champonship distances.
We had five of our juniors out on the day with Joe Smith,
Curtis Owen and Jack Sammons running the 3K Under 13 race.
Joe finished 88th in 12:02 and Curtis finished 100th in
12:24 and Jack 112th in 13:41 Well done to the three of
you. Curtis was taken ill at the end and was taken to
hospital were he was found to be suffering from
dehydration. It
doesn't only happen on hot days. We are pleased to say
that he recovered quite quickly and is now well again.
In the under 15 boys we had Nathan Sabin and Matty Burdett
running the 4K course. Both ran well with Nathan finishing
47th in 16:08 and Matty 102nd in 18:00. These races were
also used as the Staffordshire Championships and we are
waiting to find out how they all did in those
Championships. As soon as we know we will have it the on

Stoke City Parks Series

Overall 4 races Tom Sabin and
Ellie Baxter finished the series in 2nd place. Nathan
finished 7th overall in the very competitive
U/15’s.
Another good
performance from the three young Harriers, Nathan Sabin
7th, Tom Sabin 3rd and Ellie Baxter 4th in the final race
of the series, held at Hanley park on 18 August.
Again
the 3 harriers raced in the third sub-4 city parks grand
prix at Fenton Park on July 14, another competetive race
dominated by city of stoke.
Nathan finishing 10th in the under 15s, Tom finishing 3rd
in the under 11s and Ellie finishing 4th in the under 11s
(subject to results being correct, I have noticed some
inconsistences with published race results for age groups
and runners numbers).
Last race being held at Hanley Park mid August, when
overall standings will be fought for with the possibility
of the youngsters coming home with medals.
Brilliant running to all three - Keep it Up !!!!!
And
the young Harriers did themselves proud in the
2nd
of the 4 races at Tunstall Park on 9th June,
Tom Sabin maintaining 2nd
place in the under 11, Ellie Baxter maintaining
6th
place in the under 11 and Nathan up against stiff
competition from the city of stoke lads came
11th
in the under 15’s. Excellent performance from all
three runners. Well done.
Three juniors, Ellie Baxter, Nathan Sabin and Tom Sabin,
represented the Harriers in the first of the series at
Longton Park on the 12th
May.
All under 15s started together in the 2km race around the
park and all ran very good races and times.
Ellie was 6th
in the FU11, Nathan 9th
in the MU15 and Tom 2nd
in the MU11 category.
With three more races left they all look set for a good
series.

Inter
Counties Cross Country
On
Saturday 7th March the Inter Counties Cross Country
Championships took place at Mansfield. This event is for
all the top athletes in every county to run against each
other. It is televisied live on Sky TV. So it was great to
see that our own Nathan Sabin won his first County Vest and
represented Staffordshire in the boys under 13 race. For
someone who only started running at the begining of the
last cross country season Nathan has done extemely well. We
are sure that all the experience he has gained this season
will stand him in good stead for next season.
Well done Nathan.
Staffordshire
Schools Cross Country
In
the recent Staffs School Cross Country Championships both
Sophie Cartmail and Nathan Sabin had very good runs. Sophie
finished an excellent 15th in her race and Nathan kept up
his recent good form coming home in 24th spot. Well done to
both.
.
Nathan Sabin (above)
ran a superb race at the Staffordshire Cross-Country
Championships at Sandwell on Saturday 10 January!
He finished 7th in the Under 13 boys race which will
hopefully take him through to run for the county in
March.
And then on
January 24th he
had a very good run in the under 13s boys race at the
Midland Counties Cross Country Championships and finished
40th , from 116 finishers, in a time of 11-57 over a 3k
course.

North
Staffordshire Cross Country League Race - 13 December 2008
The
fourth and final League meeting for this season visited
Westwood High School at Leek. A very waterlogged and muddy
circle around hilly fields - with "Killer Hill" near the
end.
It was exhausting conditions - especially as it was raining
much of the time. Well done to all of you who ran their
races.
Tom Sabin finished 5th in the Under 11 Boys race, which
gained him 3rd place overall 4 races in the season.
Brother Nathan Sabin found the conditions very tiring and
could only finish 9th in the Under 13 Boys race, though
this gave him 1st place over the 4 races thanks to his
previous brilliant runs.
Ellie
Baxter finished 16th (10min 05) and Sara Holiday finished
18th (10min 43) in the Under 11 Girls race.
Harriet Ward finished 13th (9min 41) in the Under 13 Girls
race and 10th overall for the season.

This
third meeting of the League was held at Stafford Common and
saw a growing turnout of Club junior runners and improving
performances - well done lads & lasses, you are working
well!
And it was real
cross-country conditions today at the Common (as usual). A
good mix of firm ground and VERY slippery & muddy areas
left everyone's legs well caked in mud.
Positions and times for our young performers in their
respective races were as follows:

The Race-A True Story
Poem
written about my race at Stafford Common,
15th
November 2008
By Ellie Baxter aged 9
.
I
love to run,
I love to race,
But I must remember to tie my lace.
I set off fast,
I set off true,
The mud I trod was just like glue,
My foot went in,
The soggy goo,
Alas, I lost my running shoe.
I finished the race, one shoe less,
My socks they were a muddy mess,
I was not sad,
I was not glum,
As I finished I saw my dad and mum.
