HINSTOCK 10K – Multi terrain

This was a race which i wasn’t really looking forward to after a semi disastrous run a litchfield 10k.on friday had a tiring run on the chase then did 65+mile cycle t ride on saturday so woke up with very tired legs.race started in the centre of hinstock and made its way across the the local football pitch,which didn’t please every one especially the footballers as they had to postpone kickoff for a few minutes.for the next 2 miles it went back onto roads which were mainly downhill ,next 3 miles was mainly offroad on either farm tracks,footpaths or field boundaries. the rain the night before had softened the ground just nicely and also the roads were still damp,which helped as my off road trainers are so grippy on dry roads. at about 5 miles it went back to roads ,where i started chatting to junior who was very tired,(so was i) and we helped each other and at the finished he definfently did nor respect his elders and sprinted the last 50m. i finished in a very respectable time of 41.36(2nd best 10k time) and 11th overall(highest race placing) so the moral of this tale is to race with tired legs

WARRINTON HALF MARATHON

18/9/11

 

 

I entered this race as I needed a Half in my training for Chester Marathon.

The weather was dry with a slight breeze which made it perfect race conditions.

The course started and finished in Victoria Park with a race track finish into the stadium. The course itself was undulating and was mostly uphill for the first half with a slight down hill finish. The race was on the road and through the park.

I was the only Harrier running as far as i know. I finished in 80th place overall and 6th lady in a PB of 1hr 30 :41.

1339 runners finished the course.The race winner was Daniel Cliffe in 1hr 09:44 and the 1st lady was Louise Blizzard from Belgrave Harriers in 1 hr 22:27.

GREAT NORTH RUN

Here are the results for Stafford Harriers from the Great North Run yesterday.I started in Zone B so was through the start line in 2 minutes. The weather to start with was fine, ideal for running.The course is mainly flat with a slight hill to tackle from mile 11 to 12. As usual the crowds were fantastic with their support, with people cheering the entire 13 miles. The rain poured down from mile 11 to the finish. I was well pleased with my time beating my PB on this course by 1 second, and last year’s time by 14 minutes.

NOTTINGHAM MARATHON

11/9/11

 

Quite a warm day in Nottingham for the marathon which is a figure of eight course, unlike Wolverhampton this is a totally different second lap which took in the national water sports centre (very windy running around there)! Rain was forecast but luckily stayed away until the end. I completed the marathon in 3 hrs 58.04 (pb) and came in 504^th out of 1405 finishers. I couldn’t see any other Harriers on the results for either the full or the half.

GOODRICH 10K

Sunday 11th September

 

On a dry but windy day Chris Hollinshead competed in the Goodrich 10km race,

which also doubled up as the Midland Masters Championships. After the

mountains of Leek and the undulations of Hexham, Chris was hoping for a flat

course and got his wish for the first one and a half miles! He was then

confronted with another climb for around one and a half miles into a head

wind. Having survived this it was downhill all the way and Chris finished

6th overall in a time of 34.31 minutes and became Midland Masters M45

Champion.

 

 

 

 

 

 

HELL RUNNER HELL UP NORTH

 

Sunday 11th September Marie Claire, Amelie and I went to Delamere Forest as Marie Claire had entered me into the Hell runner Hell up north. This is marketed as a 10-12 mile trail race with some tough mud. I had an idea that this could get messy but I was in for a shock. We arrived nice and early and went down to the start area, there were plenty of runners in fancy dress and someone carrying an ironing board on his back (I said to Marie-Claire “If he beats me I am never running again”). So I left my support team to go to the start. At the start the announcer stated that spectators could go to “the hills of hell” or “the bogs of doom”, Nice!.

 

So we set off and my plan to run nice and steady sort of backfired when I found myself leading but feeling like I wasn’t pushing it (Have I mis judged this). Anyway it was a very pleasant trail race for a while, twisting and turning with the occasional mud thrown in, lost a couple of places but still having fun. But then came the kicker. A massive bog that I had to cross. I went down the edge, slow progress was made and so went for the middle, that is when I tried to maker a leap for it, went waist deep and then ended up with mud in my face and hair. I managed to get out and tried to get the legs going again. Managed to keep going and then had to negotiate the “hills of hell”. Basically run up and down the same hill zig zag fashion 4 or 5 times. Lots of fun when caked in mud.

 

Carry on for a further 2 or 3 miles and nearly home to finish off in “the bogs of doom”. I think they call it a bog cos it smells awful. It was a bog of doom and it was longer, deeper and smellier than the 1st. I managed to pick up a rubber duck for a spot prize and was getting sick of the sight of mud. So having negotiated this it was then onto the finish. Another place was lost in the bog but I didn’t care, I just wanted to finish. I came home in 1hr 26 mins and 4th place. A quick wash off under the only hose pipe available and then off to the pub to feed the family and have pint. A fun race overall and might take the challenge of the race on Cannock Chase in March for some more mud therapy.

LICHFIELD 10K

11/9/11

Forty One Harriers made the trip over to Lichfield for this years 10K race and the latest race in the Harriers Challenge. It was a very pleasant day except for the wind blowing down the finishing straight.

First home for the Harriers and continuing his good form in the senior ranks was our junior Nathan Sabin finishing 20th (38-18) in a very strong field. Chris Skellern was our first lady home in 95th place (44-12) and she won the L45 prize. Not bad considering it was her second win in two days and third race in four days.

Offa’s Dyke Challenge

The Offa’s Dyke Challenge is one of 8 events organised by Trailblaze recently set up around the country taking runners along National Trust Trails. This particular challenge is to get from Prestatyn to Knighton (98 miles) with climb’s that total some 17000 plus feet and a time limit of 36 hours.

So with the weeks of training behind me and plenty of praying to the weather gods, we arrived at the Beach in Prestatyn. Looking in-land just a mile away the first climb of the Challenge was very visible, some 600 feet up the side of the cliffs with check point 1 just over the top.

0630 am and I was off slow and steady and in no time at all I was into the first climb, no rhythm in my running gained yet but I reached CP1 my lungs felt as if they were already bursting. I did stop and take in the view and boy was it worth it. The Great Orme looked resplendent and you could also just see Snowdon. Enough of a rest it was time to get down to it and head further in land. Check point 2 came and went lost count of the stiles crossed already and Check point 3 was in my sights. However on route to CP3 I managed to get savaged by a dog, bloody “Jack Russell” little S$£#, man’s best friend not runners.

So the first 12 miles were completed food and fluids topped up and I was off to hit the real hills. First up was Moel-y-Parc at 1000ft then Moel Arthur at 1400ft and finally the highest climb of the whole run Moel Famau at 1830ft and eventually down to check point 4. A late lunch was taken here, a doggy bag of spag bols from my support team who had spent there lunch time in the pub, cheers team. Off again this time trying to beat the weather and get further down the trail. So back up on to the ridge where visibility suddenly dropped to about 20 feet, running in the clouds maybe a great read, but you don’t half get wet. 30 miles in to the race the trail drops down to the village of Llandegla and check point 5, I was only the second runner to reach this point. Soaked to the skin, a complete change of clothes was required and it was my turn to visit the Pub for rehydration and carb loading.

Dusk was soon upon us, the weather not helping, but I was warm and dry again and so I left my support crew drying kit out in the cab of the van I head off through Llandegla forest heading to Worlds End and along the Eglwyseg Mountain where I started to come across green eyed monsters. Sheep in the day light are one thing but in the dark!!!!! Check point 6 in the bag (60km) and off down into Llangollen. The final Hare retired here, leaving the tortoise from Stafford to plod on into the lead. Feet still in good order, no blisters and the walk run strategy working well. If only it would just stop raining!!!

Trefonen and check point 7 was only 24km away and I would be over half way and it was all down hill from there? Coming out of Llangollen navigation across the fields started to become a bit of an issue but I made it to Chirk Castle only to find a Bull in the field S$£#. I had to take the alternative route round which wasn’t that well marked, but it got me where I wanted to go. As more up’s and down’s came and went things started to become harder to do. Navigation across the fields, visibility and the weather, plus fatigue were starting to take affect. Within shouting distance of CP7 I seemed to go round in a circle. I eventually checked in 20 hours 32 minutes and 52 miles from the start. It was at this point I gave myself a check over and took the decision it would be wise to call it a day and safer, how things change in such a short space of time. So sadly I retired from the Challenge. Disappointed at not going further and already planning a return next year I got my head down for a few hours, before returning home. I would also like to say that without the help of my support team I couldn’t have done what I did, thank you team. Sorry I didn’t finish.

 

 

WOLVERHAMPTON MARATHON AND HALF MARATHON

Just 4 Harriers made the not so long journey to Wolverhampton for the combined half and full marathon for an early start. The race also included a half marathon relay and 19.4K cycle race. Competitors in all three running events ran the same course and started together with the full marathon runners taking on a slightly modified second lap. There was a good field with 318 finishing the full marathon and 901 people completing the half marathon. The course definitely has PB opportunites with a gentle downhill and flat first 2 thirds and a few not too steep climbs when returning back to Wolverhapmton. The weather was about right, the sun poked through occasionally but it was mostly overcast with a gentle breeze. The marathon was won in 2:41:36 by Dominic Croft of the Woodstock Harriers and the half marathon in 1:09:09 by Ross Jones of the Tipton Harriers. Chris Owen of Stafford Harriers had a very good finishing position and time in the full marathon and the complete full and half marathon Harrier times are given below.

people say ,wolverhampton marathon boring! but it has got a few things going for it a 1/3 of the price of many city marathons say brighton,guaranteed entry unlike london and local it might not be out in the country side with nice long windy roads but set in a urban landscape with many twists and turns ,around numerous housing estates and rat runs.this is one reason why i like it as you can’t see far in front the miles seam shorter.the race didn’t start to well,within 20 yds a bottle bounced of my belt and 0.5m later 2 gels also slipped,but the pace was to quick to stop and retrieve.with it being a half and full marathon combined it’s quite hard not to treat it as a half ,so at half distance my time was 1hr32 and knew i was going to suffer later on.managed to keep this pace until 18m where a slight uphill caught me(this incline catches me every time even on the first lap) and i started to suffer,at 20m reckoned on 3hr30 Finnish,24m stopped and walked at last water station,at just over 25m had a bit of shock craig taylor from newcastle came past(up to this point i knew i was group leader) kept pace with him for about .5m but legs said sorry ,had a quick look behind and saw no one so eased the pace of ,byebye extra point.finished in 3hrs19m53s .(nead to sort out my fuel and hydration for snowden marathon)was only harrier on the full but 3 did the halfdave cook 1.42.34dave payling 1.42.44john hateley 2.16.19

NATIONAL VETS 10 MILE ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS

After last weeks gold medal in the Vets Half Marathon Championships at Leek Chris Hollinshead tried his luck with the National 10 mile Road Championships this week. Still suffering from the hills of Leek he managed to grab the silver medal in 57-30. This race also had a hill near the end so Leek was good training. Still waiting for the full results but apparently the race was won by a Kenyan athelete in 49 mins.

 

BLACKPOOL HALF MARATHON

I signed up for this race as part of my build up for Chester Marathon next month to give me an idea of my current fitness. After a cool day and rain on the Saturday I was hoping for the same conditions for the race. However it turned out to be a very warm day and not ideal conditions for a half marathon. The race started and finished on the middle walkway outside the Hilton and headed North towards Cleveleys and returning South along the lower walkway to the North Pier, then back along the middle walkway. A 2 lap course, that as you can imagine was very boring. Despite this, a fast course. I had a great race and managed to finish 2nd in a PB of 1.19.01. 409 runners finshed the race.

The race winner was Duncan Anderson in 1.16.15 and the Ladies race was won by Hayley Kuter of Salford Harriers in 1.19.56 and she was 3rd overall

 

 

LITTLE ASTON 5 Miles

Two Harriers did this flat 5 mile course through the almost traffic free country lanes of Little Aston which is close to Sutton Coldfield and Aldridge.. It was organised by Sutton Coldfield Athletics club. It was a small scale run going centred around the school grounds and the local recreation ground. It was very close to my (Tony’s) house so we were able to amble through the woods and over the golf course to gte there.

Looking around at the start we were up against runners from Sutton ,Aldridge, Wrekin Road Runners, Telford and “SE Fitness”. In total thee were about 100 or so runners of all abilities. I (Tony ) was the butt of many quips from my other club Aldridge about the fact I was wearing my Stafford vest , “trip him up” one said (jokingly of course ) I said don’t worry , you lot will be ahead of me anyway.

We set off down Forge Lane , the kids in the fun run sped past the main group , turning at 1 mile coming back towards us to finish their two mile dash . The scenery was nice taking in the old “forge” over Footherley brook before doing a circuit of country lanes around Stonnall and Shenstone before heading back towards the school to finish. The weather was great for running, it had rained earlier but was now drying out.

I(Tony) had gone off too fast (too fast for me anyway !)and was trying to keep up with a colleague from Aldridge before slowing up rapidly towards the finish line in ( time ) . I said a few choice words when I realised I couldn’t pull the ever increasing gap back.

The memento was a towel which came in very useful.

The race was a very local one, well marshalled with a water station at 2.5.miles . This race is a good idea if anyone wants a PB for a 5 miler. Its very flat save for some very slight inclines . I would recommend it as a lighter more scenic option to the Wolves half /full.

The weather was semi overcast, ideal for running. The first runner in was Dave Mansbridge of Telford A.C with a time of 27:17.

First Lady was Lynne Cox of Tipton Harriers in 6th place with a time of 29:05.

I was first Harrier in. I never thought I would see the day. It has finally happened.

Overall a good event and well worth a visit.

LEEK HALF MARATHON

Sunday 21/8/11

 

More runners than usual took part in this tough Half Marathon as it was the National Veterans Half Marathon Championships. They certainly picked a tough one. Chris Hollinshead has an aversion to hills that is well documented so it is to his credit that he took on the course and finished as National Champion. Chris Skellern who will run anything, anywhere, (as long as not a marathon) again showed her good form by finishing in Bronze Medal place in the Ladies Championships.

Race the Train Quarry Challenge 10K

As I am still trying to get fit I did the 10K rather than the 14 miler which was

in the afternoon. The start was changed as the local farmer had ploughed one of

the fields. The weather was fine although it poured down for the later race. For

those people who have done the main race this was the last 10K of the course.

Starting in a field we had a small section of road before going straight up a

hill which the majority including myself ultimately walked, after a short flat

section we queued at a steep decline. This was followed by several bogs and

various sharp inclines and descents and then the sheep track which was on a

steep camber. During this time the train passed us which I did not see as I was

concentrating on keeping upright. The last two miles was on flat fields and

roads, the first mile took 14.5 minutes and the last 8.50. My time was 1.04.54

which was a PW but I was happy to finish. The winner was Daryl Barnaby of

Fairwater Runners in 39.28.

First lady was Sarah Bolger unattached in 46.53. To beat the train you had to

beat 53.58. In the afternoon Sue and I boarded the train to watch the main race.

We had a great weekend stopping at the Penhelig Arms with Pete Burns and his

friends and also Jane Bisiker/ Vicky Lowndes and their families. Apart from the

14 miler and 10K there is also a 5 miler and also a childrens fun run. Having

done a run you can then go crabbing off Aberdovey Pier.

The Clyde to Alexandra 10km Road Race

Otago, South Island, New Zealand

Two former Harriers turned out in the middle of winter where the water goes down the plug-hole the wrong way in Central Otago, New Zealand.

The race was the Otago County Championships and attracted a field of two hundred runners and almost 100 walkers. There were junior races from 2km and the walkers started an hour before the runners thankfully although looking at the racewalker’s times, they move pretty quickly. The race started at the far side of Clyde dam with a decent, chilly wind behind everyone at the start. 3km of downhill along the side of the river Clutha and a fairly level course along the side of the local highways brought runners into Alexandra on a long, straight finish. The fastest walker was a lass in a class of her own, completing 10km in 51 minutes whilst our ex-Harriers completed the course in 39:32 for Pete Sarson and Joe Connolly 41:33. There were five men inside 32 minutes and the first lady finisher was in 36 minutes. The weather was beautiful, a bright, spring-like day with not a sign of the Antarctic blasts that were to hit a week later. Pete and Joe hope to catch up again later in the year.

STAFFS KNOT 5 MILER

 

Stafford Harriers turner out in force for the Clubs own race on Cannock Chase. Now fewer than 58 Harriers completed the couse. There was some success to as the Men’s team won the team trophy for the first time since 1993. The ladies team finished in second spot.

 

There were individual success as well as Chris Hollinshead was 1st V40 and the ladies Kirsty Stephenson, Cris Skellern and Tracey Gee all won the age group prizes.

INDIAN QUEENS HALF MARATHON

I competed in the 29th Indian queens 1\2 marathon on a warm sunny day. There were 550 runners making up the field. The course is mainly off road on a gravel track with some long steep hills along the way. Not many spectators for support, so a fairly boring run. I was going well for the 1st 10 miles then slowed right down for the last 3 miles. This was my first 1\2 marathon since Stafford in March and I was struggling towards the end. I finished in 1hr 51mins so not too disappointed but it was 11 minutes slower that I did in last years race. A decent medal for all finishers.

DEREHAM 5K

 

 

What an eventful week for Chris Hollinshead and Emma Hurcombe, getting engaged and competing in two 5km races! On Sunday 24th July while on holiday in Norfolk Chris and Emma undertook the inaugural Dereham 5km road race.The race was part of the clubs 25th year anniversary and the route was two flat laps of a closed off town centre. Chris finished 4th (three seconds off third) with a time of 16.52 minutes and Emma was 18th (26th female) in a new personal best time of 25.18 minutes.

 

Three days later it was back to business with the West Bromwich Harriers 5km (Wednesday 27th) within the grounds of Aston University sports ground. The race was run completely on grass (distant memories of cross country came flooding back!) and was a thorougly enjoyable event. Chris finished 2nd in 17.31minutes and Emma 41st (first W35) in 25.18 minutes.

A good turn out and some great results for the Harriers at this years Trentham Ten. In second place in the race behind Ben Gamble was Harrier Matt Woodman in 57-38. Steve Vaughan also had a great run finishing in 8th place in 60-22.

Our ladies also did us proud finishing as 1st Ladies team with Kirsty Stephenson 3rd lady overall, Chris Skellern 1st L 45 and Tracey Gee 1st L40.

5 Harriers took the trip to Wolverhampton for this off road race that starts and finishes at Aldersley stadium. the course loops round fields, onto the disused railway track for about 2 miles, loops round some paths adjoining the canal and then back onto the railway track to head back to the stadium. It was mainly flat with just a few little bumps here and there. luckily, the trees along the railway track afforded a bit of shade as it was a hot morning. there were only just over 100 runners, which was a shame as it was a nice race. Perhaps more harriers will enter next year.

Stafford Harriers Charity Run 2011

Birmingham Black Country Half Marathon
2^nd July 2011
Twenty-six Harriers took part in this year’s Charity Run, the Birmingham Black Country Half Marathon once again. Harrier numbers were up on last year-something to do with it being in the Challenge perhaps? We couldn’t have asked for better weather, sunny and bright. In fact several worried Harriers were seen applying sun cream in the boatyard at Wolverhampton before the start.

We were also warned before the start of ‘a little local difficulty’ at Tipton, 5 miles in, where some idiot had set fire to vegetation. This meant that the Fire Brigade had to put a hose across the towpath so they could extract water from the canal to put the fire out. It just meant you had to leap over it when you reached it.

Most people, including myself, turned in better times than previously, perhaps it was because the weather was so nice. I was certainly motoring by about 7 miles.

Ian Talbot was first Harrier home in 1:32:42 followed by myself, Richard Caley, Neil Martin and the rest of us. It was nice to see that the showering facilities beneath the NIA had been reinstated this year.

All finishers got a rather nice canvas shoe bag with their medal this year.

Once showered, we all made our way to the Pitcher & Piano restaurant bar where we partook of a few (well-earned) beverages and some food (25% off when you showed your medal). Eventually, various people left to go home or shopping with their families, leaving a hard core of us to go on a mini-tour of Birmingham taking in Broad Street, the Wellington, the Old Joint Stock , Briar Rose and Shakespeare pubs, courtesy of Tony Baker. After that, it was home on the train for a well-earned sleep!

May I take this opportunity to give heartfelt thanks to all of you who participated, I hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as I did, now let’s see the money roll in…

The race winner was Bertie Powell of Woodford Green With Essex Ladies in 1:16:26, whilst the ladies winner was Emma Taylor (Unattached) in 1:32:10.
