Newcastle Dales Dash

4th December 2022

Race Report by Leon Stringer

A trip up the A34 to Apedale on a cold dry morning for this “5ish miles” race. Event HQ was in the buildings opposite the Heritage Centre where we collected our numbers and ankle tags, and there were also entries on the day. We waited in the warmth in the Heritage Centre before the start. (If you haven’t been on the museum’s mine tour I highly recommend this).

This event has a new course consisting of three slightly different laps. All involved a climb and for laps two and three this was an arduous slog to the top. At the top there was a bit of a wind, and you had a brief flat section to take in the views before a steep descent. The surfaces were a mix of tarmac, hardcore, woodland and grassy paths. The organiser’s email recommended trail shoes but I was fine in road shoes although one climb on muddy grass was a bit tricky.

This is a nice friendly race the marshals were great despite having to stand outside on a rather fresh morning.

There were 131 finishers.

Meerbrook 15K

19th November 2022

Race Report by John Finney
A MAGICAL MYSTICAL RACE

Saturday 19 November and the penultimate race in the NSRRA 2022 race calendar. The infamous Meerbrook 15K, is a marmite challenge for many. But a bonus for me; another opportunity to enjoy one of my favourite landscapes of all time. Since teenage weekends spent cycling from Sneyd Green to explore the White Peak I’ve returned time and time again to this beautiful area. In recent years family indulgences have been about walking around Tittesworth reservoir, trekking over the Roaches and on to the Ship Inn at Wincle via Roche End, and enjoying birthday lunches at the Lazy Trout.

So, what of running the area? Well, for me there was a Christmas Cracker along the top of the Roaches, in part inspired by the exploits of non-other than local lad Roy Fowler, the ‘Red Fox’, this gritstone escarpment being one of his favourite training grounds. Then there were a few Leek Half Marathons before enduring my first ‘Meerbrook’ in September 2006. I say ‘enduring’ for good reason. Put it this way. I learnt a few new choice swear words as the field staggered back up Gun Hill on the return journey.

On the journey from Stafford up to this year’s race, we were greeted by a few wisps of innocuous fog as we approached Leek. But soon there was bright sunlight on top of
Blackshaw Moor. However, the drop-down to Meerbrook revealed an almost magical mystical landscape, courtesy of streaks of mist swirling and hanging in the valley with the peaks of the Roaches popping up above and appearing to be keeping watch over all before them.

Then for a mini hike off to the start and time on the line to reflect on how I might perform compared to my 2021 effort which itself took me twenty minutes more to finish than fifteen years earlier. Yikes. That’s an average slowing of someone and a half minutes a year. The joys of ageing.

Soon we were staggering up Gun Hill were those but a hundred metres ahead gradually disappeared into heavy fog. A different kind of atmosphere. Going up and ‘over the top’, so to speak Jodrell Bank was somewhere over to the left. But no views across the Cheshire Plain today. But my enjoyment of the long drop down to the bottom of the course was interrupted by having to retie an undone shoelace. By then though, the fog had dissipated and I soon had a longing to deliberately take a wrong turn down to Danebridge, a favourite boyhood spot for sailing toy boats. Happy days.

Starting back up the main drag the mist returned but a lot less dense. And through the murk, I thought I caught a glimpse of one of those pesky Brocklehurst wallabies. But that might have been a mirage brought on by the strain of running up a vertical hill. Then the joy of finishing a superbly organised race negotiated nine seconds slower than 2021. Still, there was an excuse; stopping to retie that blooming’ lace. Will I never learn?

Halloween Half Marathon

30th October 2022
Race report Wendy Sears

This Worksop half marathon is dubbed the Halloween Half Marathon and provides a good opportunity for individuals to run in Halloween costumes. It has a cutoff time of 3 hours 15 minutes and is run on closed roads and paths. It has an overall elevation of over 725 feet and is an undulating course, although it is promoted as a potential PB course.

There is accessible pay and display parking within a 10-minute walk of the start. The course has apparently altered from its original route, but the current route starts and finishes at the Outward Academy Portland and goes through the scenic Clumber Park. The first mile up Sparken Hill is a steady incline and then there are a couple of miles of undulation, with a lovely long straight downhill stretch around mile 2 that allows you to see hundreds of runners ahead of you… unless you are at the front of course. After that, there are less dramatic downhill sections and longer stretches of inclines and flat sections of the course. Prepare for what feels like longer inclines towards the latter part of the course but with a final around a half a mile downhill stretch towards the finish.

There are three water stations provided along the route and amusing signage displayed in Clumber Park which is well worth a read.

This is a very well-organised event, with excellent marshalling and good local support. Food trucks provide some food at the end and there is access to toilets in the school grounds for a quick post-run freshen-up.

A medal and t-shirt are provided to all finishers, as well as water, fruit, crisps and other sundry items to aid recovery.

Overall, a good but challenging course.

Lee Valley Velopark 10K

29 October 2022

Race report by Leon Stringer

To Stratford in East London for this event in the shadow of the 2012 Olympics’ velodrome. There was a choice of one mile, 5K, 10K, 10 mile and half marathon distances on a one-mile course. There was chip timing but it was up to you to keep count of your laps. I thought six laps would be boring but knowing what was coming helped me get into a steady pace.

The course was on a hard path. I’d anticipated a flat course but there were two underpasses and two bridges on the route. These weren’t big climbs individually but the elevation added up lap after lap.

It was unseasonably mild and when the sun came out it made running harder work. The energetic support from the friendly marshals was greatly appreciated. Afterwards you could go for coffee upstairs in the velodrome and watch the cyclists training on the track.

51 runners finished the 10K

London Marathon

2nd October 2022

Race Report by Mel Deakin

Almost three years after Simon Bromley messaged me to say I had been drawn out of the hat for the club London marathon place, it was very surreal to be in London to run in the 2022 event.

In the summer I started marathon training (again), lost the lard, ran the gruelling South Cheshire 20 to give myself the best chance of being fit enough to enjoy the event. The train strike the Saturday before threw a curveball – if I was at all superstitious, I would have bailed but fortunately, I am not, and took it as an opportunity to have an extra day in London. It paid off though as on the Saturday, Mark and I were strolling through Greenwich Park and saw Kipchoge. Pinch myself moment, I really felt I was dreaming.

Sunday morning at the start I was a bundle of emotion. I couldn’t wait to start, determined to enjoy the event as much as I could before it started to hurt which marathons do. The wave starts worked well, and the first few miles were easy and went so quickly, merging with the other starts, past Cutty Sark then boom, I was at Tower Bridge, one of the best parts of the 26.2 miles. What an amazing moment running over the bridge! Onward through London, so many people lining the route cheering everyone on. By this time it was getting warm and none of the forecast rain had appeared. Canary Wharf is where my legs started to scream and it got difficult.  I was determined not to walk, remembered Paula Radcliffe’s advice and kept counting to 100 in my head over and over again and ticked off the kilometres, 10, 9, 8….just a parkrun to go…. Westminster was in sight and sound, the noise of the crowds cheering was phenomenal and carried me all the way along Birdcage walk and around the corner – the finish in sight, what a feeling. Once I crossed the line I couldn’t hold back the tears. What a wait to run the club place but so worth it.

I have said for a while this would be my fifth and last marathon. I had the most amazing experience running, the crowds and atmosphere is so hard to describe, I don’t think I can top it. Good to finish my marathon days on a high and I’m looking forward to focusing on shorter distances. I am even okay with my time – I was 62 seconds off a PB (Manchester 2018), proud of myself that despite being four years older I got so close. And according to Garmin/Strava who are always right, I ran 26.84 miles ie 0.64 miles long so despite what my official time says, to me London 2022 will always be my best and most gutsy marathon performance.

Thank you to my family, friends and colleagues for supporting me, and to Stafford Harriers for this opportunity. I had an amazing weekend I will remember forever.
