Milton Keynes Winter Half Marathon

Race report Leon Stringer
With multiple events cancelled due to Storm Darragh, the organisers emailed on Friday and Saturday to confirm that this would go ahead. The day arrived with strong blustery winds and squalls of rain but they kept their word.
We set off in waves, not colours or letters but Christmas songs – Mariah Carey, The Darkness, Wizzard, etc. So when I heard “It was Christmas Eve, babe, in the drunk tank” it was my time to get in the pen by the start line. This course is all on footpaths, mainly Milton Keynes “redways” – foot and cycle paths that criss-cross the area – and the canal towpath. This made for a scenic course but it was often too narrow to pass. It was only from mile-6 that runners thinned out enough to maintain my own pace. The plus side of this was that you weren’t on your own at any point.
Despite the high winds much of the course was fairly sheltered. But on the exposed spots, a roadside section or standing around once you crossed the line, you quickly got cold. Getting back to the start/finish by Willen Lake there was plenty of support for the final push. Extra thanks to the marshals giving us energetic support in really rubbish weather.
2,138 completed the course.
