The Chasewater Christmas Pudding Dash 5k and 10K

We had just Ben Deakin running in the 5K race, finishing in a very respectable 4th position, out of 203 runners, in a time of 20:29, which was a PB for him. Ben was 2 minutes and 37 seconds faster this year compared to last, so a massive well done to him!

Castlefields 5K Time Trials

This was the third of three planned time trial events for the Juniors, in which we had 15 running, along with the adult improvers group, on a somewhat shorter than normal course, due to the disused railway track being closed due to work being carried out on it. The course distance was measured to be 3.64K. As in previous time trials, they are intended to monitor the Junior’s progress, and chart how they do, over time, and offer support and coaching accordingly. These events place the Juniors in a good, strong position to start the cross country season, so well done to all that took part!

Park Runs

We are aware of Isabelle and Harry Beckett competing in at least one Park run this month, so a big well done to them. These events like the time trials, always serve as a great way to measure your performance and rate of improvement.

Castlefields Time Trial

14/9/16

Thanks to all those who ran the final Time Trials for this year, at Castlefields tonight, here are the results. Because this course was different to the usual one along the railway track (we measured a distance of 3.64K), you cannot really compare your times with previous ones, but hopefully you will be interested to see how you’ve done.

Thanks to all those who helped out with the event.

Junior Attendance during Summer Holidays

August is traditionally a quiet time for races, due to people’s holiday commitments, however we are aware of one race to report on.

Tuesday, 30th August
Queen’s Park, Crewe, South Cheshire 5K Series, Race 3 of 3
This was the last of a three part race for Ben Deakin (the previous two being held during June & July), coming in 69th place and in a time of 21:39. There were 160 finishers. Ben’s times for the June & July races were 21:05 & 22:38 respectively. Well done Ben!

Junior Attendance during Summer Holidays
Also worthy of note, is that during the six weeks school holiday, we have had on average 40 Juniors attend the Monday night session and between 10 and 15 on a Wednesday, which I believe shows their commitment and dedication, despite other distractions during the busy holiday period.

Junior Section Report for July 2016

Wednesday, 6th July

Shugborough Estate, 4 x 2mile Relays

We had ten teams of Juniors running in this event, which had been postponed from June, due to extreme weather, which like last year, started and finished in front of the Old House. Once again this was a fantastic turn out for the Juniors who produced some very good times, and of course, enjoyed competing against and beating many of the seniors. Well done to everyone who took part.

The Thunder Buddies team (Robbie Gorman, Jared Mace, Will Buckley and Kian Arnott) came fifth overall in the Boys Team 64 years age group, which was a good effort, whilst the Red Hot Umpa Lumpas came in 7th place in the Boys Team 52 (Ben Jones, Ben Cook, Sam Holland and Jake Oliver).

In addition to these 40 runners, we also had some additional Juniors running as part of family teams; Mission In-Hodkinson were Jack and George Hodkinson, coming in 1sr place, Matthew Hilsdon as part of Phil and 3 other bumblers and Ben Deakin as part of the Deakin Dynamites.

As always, it was a magnificent display from all of the Junior Harriers, who appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves.

Sunday, 10th July

Cheadle 4

We had Matt Bonney running in this event, which was his debut senior race. Matt finished in 130th place, in a time of 31:40. There were 230 finishers. A big well done to Matt!

Thursday, 14th July

Rocester, JCB 2.3 mile Fun Run and 5 mile Lakeside Race

Seven Junior Harriers turned out to compete in the Fun Run, which this year was in reverse direction, at the JCB World Headquarters in Rocester, on what was a pleasant summer’s evening. There were 82 Fun Runners in total.

A massive well done to George Hodkinson for once again finishing in first place.

In the main 5 mile race, which like the Fun Run, was in reverse, with a lap around the lake, we had Ben Deakin and Jack Hodkinson running, this being Ben’s début JCB 5 mile race, and coming in 55th place, in a time of 37:31, and Jack 83rd finishing in a time of 39:52. There were a total of 220 runners. Well done to both Ben and Jack for competing in this event, which was once again, a magnificent display from all of the Junior Harriers.

This was to be the last race for Jack Hodkinson running as a Junior as he turned 17 a few weeks afterwards. The Junior coaches would like to thank Jack for his hard work and commitment shown whilst running with the Juniors, and wish him well as he makes the transition in to the seniors.

Saturday, 16th July

We had five teams of Juniors (37 in total) competing in these games, and a further five against the adults.

Thursday, 21st July

Brocton, The Chase, Harriers Handicap race

On what was a warm and muggy evening, we had two Juniors running, Jake Oliver and Matt Bonney. This was Matt’s first Handicap race but ran it very comfortably and appeared to enjoy the course. The race was won by Jake, who received a prize, personal trophy and the honour of keeping the large Handicap trophy for three months. Well done to Jake and Matt.

Tuesday, 26th July

Queen’s Park, Crewe, South Cheshire 5K Series, Race 2 of 3

This was the second of a three part race for Ben Deakin, coming in 69th place, in a time of 22:38. There were 145 finishers.

Wednesday, 27th July

Marquis Drive, Cannock Chase, Staffordshire Knot 2 mile Fun Run and 5 mile Race

We had 29 enthusiastic Juniors running in the Fun Run, the course being based on the smaller loop of the main race. George Hodkinson easily won the race, with Joe Turton being the next Junior Harrier to finish in 3rd place. It is worth mentioning that out of the first ten finishers, six were Junior Harriers, which is an excellent result.

Harrier Games

Saturday 16th July 2016

The weather Gods were smiling on us today in our annual senior v junior race off better known as The Harrier Games.

Competitors of which there were a fantastic number raced over distances of 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1 mile & 3000m.

There were some brilliant performances over the afternoon, real photo finish mad dash for the lines and even a few injuries there was that much at stake!!! Juniors Willow Heath & Charlie Darby won the best finish line photo finish/gymnastic tumble award

Then it was back to the Cricket Club for the medal presentations, great Hog Roast and evening entertainment which culminated in a mass game of rounders with a cricket bat. Although I still don’t know who won maybe to be continued???

Thanks to everyone that helped in some way shape or form, without which we couldn’t do it.

And was I the only one that got loads of bites? Feel like I’ve been made a meal out of I’ve got that many.

Many thanks

Darren Mattocks

Last Saturday afternoon Stafford Harriers hosted their annual Summer Games at Rowley Park where both the Juniors and Seniors competed together in various events from the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1mile up to 3k on the track. This proved to be a great turnout from the 43 Juniors that competed who provided some very stiff competition for the Seniors, which in true tradition saw them get thoroughly beaten! All that took part had a great time and the events served as excellent experience towards their training. Afterwards the celebrations continued at Stafford Cricket Club where the presentations took place, together with a hog roast and bouncy castle. Well done to all who competed in the events.

Stone St Michael’s Junior Relays

We had 23 Juniors running as five teams in this local event, and they dominated the race given there was just one more team competing, who were from St Michael’s school. The teams comprised of five people, each running a distance of 2K alongside those athletes running in the main 10k race, which was a two lap course, and as always, the Juniors provided some very competitive performances. Team 1 were the first to finish and did so in a fantastic combined time of 36 minutes and 51 seconds. Well done all! The five teams were:-

Saturday, 7th May

Cannock Chase 1K Fun Run

On what was a rather hot day, brother and sister Sophia and Reece Bridgwood ran in this race, along with their friend Joe Sandy. Sophia finished in first place, Joe second and Reece fourth, so a massive well done to them!

Sunday, 8th May

Market Drayton 1.3 mile Fun Run

On yet another warm, sunny day, and prior to the 10K road race, we had 3 Junior Harriers running in the Fun Run, as follows.

Jake and George both received a prize comprising a technical T-shirt, drinking bottle and a draw-string bag, as well as a certificate. A big well done to Jake, George and Ben for running in this race.

In the 10K road race, of which there were 2161 that finished, we had three Juniors running, Amy Oliver, Jack Hodkinson and Kieron Mogey. This was to be Amy’s last race representing the Juniors, as she had recently turned 17 meaning going forward she will be running as part of the Senior Team. Times as follows:-

Category Aged 15+ 10K Road Race
Name Position Time
Jack Hodkinson 281 45:54
Kieron Mogey 572 51:48
Amy Oliver 1371 1:02:30

Wednesday, 11th & 18th May

Schools Athletics Championships, Rowley Park

We had eight Juniors representing their schools in a variety of events from 100m up to 1500m, and included George Hodkinson, Robbie Gorman, Kian Arnott, Jake Oliver, Jacob ?, Taygen Pike, Chloe Burrows and Ben Deakin. Well done to all that competed in these events.

Saturday, 14th May

Telford Park Run, 5K

Isobelle and Harry Beckett ran in this race, both finishing in a time of 36:00 minutes. Well done to both of them.

Sunday, 15th May

Chasewater 10K

Harry Beckett was the only Junior to be running in this race, finishing in a respectable time of 1:03:00, given he had ran the day before. This was likely to be Harry’s first 10K race so well done and we hope you enjoyed the experience!

Sunday, 22nd May

Donna Louise 5K Fun Run, Trentham Gardens

On a warm and sunny morning we had three Juniors running in this race, Matthew Hilsdon, Ben Deakin and Jake Oliver, the course being on the paths around the lake, through the Italian Gardens and up a gradual slope, which formed one lap of the main 10K event. All three Juniors had a good race and enjoyed the event.

Brathay Trust 3K Fun Run, Lake Windermere

Meanwhile, 136 miles up the M6 we had Jack and George Hodkinson running in this event, whilst their Dad was running the Marathon, both coming in second place for their respective age categories. Unfortunately due to a marshalling error, George was directed the wrong way, which meant he had to work particularly hard to catch up lost time. There is a good chance he may have come first had this not occurred.

A big well done to all the Juniors who ran in these two events.

Donna Louise 5K Fun Run

22/5/16

The Donna Louise race on Sunday 22nd May started with very hot conditions. I was looking forward to this race as the Fun Run was a reasonable distance. This race was also for a very good charity making the race a fun one to do. The Fun Run started 5 minutes after the 10K race so therefore the 5K and the 10K runners didn’t get mixed up. However, it was only about 5-10 minutes before I started catching up with the 10K runners. I managed to catch up with my Mum and Sister just before I went to finish and I think it was them who made me push to the finish.

The route was great and the scenery was beautiful with many different views. Not long after we started we came across a small forest which was great because there was lots of shade. We then came out and ran around a lake. After running round the lake we made our way into the Italian Gardens which I recognised because we walked that way from the car before – I knew there was not long to go. At this point, I didn’t realise we had to go up such a steep hill. As I made my way up that hill I knew we had to go down hill after that because I could see the finish! It was then at this point I ran up behind my Mum and Amy and they told me I was doing great and there was not long to go. After they said that, I put a spurt on for the final stretch. I had finally finished!

Overall, the Donna Louise run is definitely a run to do as it is for a good charity and the scenery is spectacular. I am certainly doing that run again!

Sunday, 13th March

Ben Deakin was the only Junior Harrier to compete in this race, finishing in first place in a time of 7:06, and received £5 prize money for his great achievement. There were 43 finishers. A massive well done to Ben!

Staffordshire Athletics Network 4 x 1 mile Relays, Rowley Park

Saturday, 19th March

We had 30 Juniors running in this event, with some great effort put in and which turned out to be enjoyable for all those who took part on their home ground. A very big well done to all who ran at this event, and thanks to the coaches and parents that supported, and to the Staffordshire Athletics

Network for organising it.

A big well done to the Under 15 Boys for coming first place in their age group, and to the Under 11 Boys & Under 15 Girls for coming second place. All were presented with certificates and in addition, the Under 15 Boys with medals.

Stafford Half Marathon Fun Run

Sunday, 20th March

We had a number of juniors running on home soil, soaking up the race atmosphere, including George Hodkinson, Matt Soanes, Jake Oliver, Matthew Hilsdon, Taygen Pike, Chloe Burrows, Ellie Withington, Isobel and Harry Beckett, Reece Bridgwood, and Ben Deakin. Apologies if I have missed anyone out. All that took part had a thoroughly good time, each receiving a medal at the end. Ben came in third place. Well done to all that ran in this event.

The Chasewater Easter Egg 5K

Sunday, 27th March

We had two Juniors running in this race, Matt Bonney and Ben Deakin, in somewhat windy conditions, both finishing in very respectable positions. Matt was the first Junior home, in 2nd place and very close behind the leader, in a time of 20:05 and Ben in 6th place, in a time of 22:08, both achieving PB’s over the given distance. There were 114 finishers. A big well done to Matt and Ben for representing the Club in this event and for achieving some very commendable times and finishing positions.

Primary Schools District Cross Country Championships

We’ve had several Juniors representing their various schools, at the Stone and Stafford Schools Partnership Cross Country events (4 races held at Birches Valley, Marquis Drive, Shugborough and Stone Common). Of those we know about were Joe Cronshaw and Sophia Bridgewood who ran in all four events, so well done to both of them!

We also had Isabelle and Harry Beckett representing their schools at Penkridge, so well done to them too!

All of the Juniors did really well, having learnt a lot from the experience, and most importantly, they enjoyed the event (especially the icecreams and pies in the pub on the way home). A very big well done to all those who ran in this event.

Sunday, 28th February

Action Heart 5, Dudley
Jack Hodkinson was once again the only Junior running in this event, which started and finished at Russells Hall Hospital. Jack had a good race, finishing in a time of 36:50, and in 63rd place. There were 380 finishers. Well done Jack!

Midland Area Cross Country Championships

29/1/16

Despite the late change in venue, there was still a good turn out of Stafford Harriers when the Midland Cross Country Championships took place at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough on Saturday.

The course was laid out on the beautiful parkland area in front of an imposing old hall and although the sun was shining, there was lots of sticky mud for runners to tackle and – in some cases – lose acquaintance with their shoes!

Harrier’s members featured in six races, with team results achieved in both the men’s and women’s senior races as well as the U15 boys.

Amy Oliver (47th) was the sole Harrier in the Girls U17 race while it was a similar story for brother Jake (81st) in the Boys U13 event.

The U15 girls had Taygen Pike, Chloe Burrows and Olivia Black featuring but lacked the fourth runner needed to achieve a team position.

The U15 boys managed to field enough runners, the team of George Hodkinson, Robbie Gorman, Matt Bonney, Ben Deakin and Kian Arnott finishing 7th in their category.

on New Year’s Day, all of which put in a great performance.

one second of his actual – well done Jack!

Saturday, 9th January

Midlands Counties Cross Country Championships, Prestwold Hall, Loughborough

We had ten juniors running on a sunny but cold and windy day. The venue had been

changed only a few days before as Stafford Common was deemed too wet for the Championships

to be held there. The course was laid out on the beautiful parkland area, part of which was in

front of the imposing old hall and as always, there was lots of sticky mud for some of the

Juniors to lose their running shoes in! Everyone seemed to enjoy the experience, and run very well

in their races, in what was a very challenging field of some of the Midlands best athletes.
