Sunday, 23rd December

96th Pete Hodgett’s Memorial Handicap Race

There were just two Juniors who ran in this festive Handicap race, Jack Heath and, Matthew Hilsdon. Jack finished in 13th place and Matthew 16th. A big well done to both that ran, putting in some excellent times as always.

Park Runs

As well as Juniors continuing to participate in the established Cannock Chase Park Runs and others up and down the country, we saw the very first one start in Stafford – called the Isobel Trail Park Run, which was on the 8th December, in which we had a number of Juniors competing. Well done to all who regularly run in these events, which over time, have been shown to improve race times and positions.

Wednesday, 19th December

A presentation was given at the Annual Junior Christmas Party, held at Flip Out, Stone, to recognise seven Juniors, voted for by the Coaches, who had consistently ran well during the year, as follows:-

Name

Following on from last year an additional award was given out this year, which went to Ben Green, for Recognition of Merit, Commitment & Achievement during 2018.

This year a further award was given out to Jake Oliver for Overall Most Improved Older Junior, in recognition of his development and improvement in making the transition from Juniors to Seniors.

A massive Well Done to all of the above Juniors. Hopefully these awards will inspire some of the other Juniors during 2019 to do their best and perform well.

Finally, the Junior Coaches would like to thank all of the Juniors for their great efforts, hard work and achievements during 2018, and wish them all the very best for 2019. A big thanks to Chris Skellern and Ian Hodkinson for their continued support and encouragement, and to Karen Hilsdon and Claire Heath for collecting the tokens.

Wednesday Night Fast Road Runs

Twelve months have passed since Phil Hilsdon’s Wednesday night fast road run group was set up and in that time it has brought on a number of the older Juniors and helped them prepare for 10K races and beyond. Thanks to Phil for dedicating his time and commitment to this worthy cause.

Park Runs

November saw the second anniversary of the Cannock Chase Park Run, and over the last 24 months it has been really pleasing to see so many of the Juniors turn out early on a Saturday morning, keen to improve on their times, and of course beat their parents and coaches. Well done guys, keep up the great work!

We had a number of Juniors taking part in these events (Rose White, Matthew Hilsdon and Leo Nicholl to mention a few), in which they ran representing their schools, rather than the Harriers. As always, it was really good to see the Juniors cheering on their fellow Harrier friends, as well as the other members of their school teams, which demonstrates the Harrier comradeship and team spirit. A big well done to all those who took part in these events.

Junior Section Report for September 2018

Sunday, 2nd September

Run and Ride Duathlon, Cannock Chase

Along with his family, Harry Beckett decided to have a go at this local event in which the competitors run then cycle and finally run once again, over fixed distances each time. I’m told Harry did very well finishing in 14th place and in a time of 1hour, 27minutes and thoroughly enjoyed himself. Nice one Harry!

Saturday, 8th September

Ipstones Junior Run

Matthew Hilsdon ran in this race, whilst hid Dad ran in the main event, finishing 5th out of 28, and in a time of 7:19. Well done Matthew!

Castlefields 5K Time Trials

This was the fourth and last of the planned time trial events for the Juniors over the summer period, in which we had 15 running, along with the adult improvers group. As in previous time trials, they are intended to monitor the Junior’s progress, and chart how they do over time, and offer support and coaching accordingly. These events place the Juniors in a good, strong position to start the cross country season, so well done to all that took part!

George came first in age category and received a trophy. Massive well done to George! For George, Jake, Ben and Sophia, this was their first 10K road race, so well done to them and to all that ran.

I also think it is just worth acknowledging that all of our young runners ran in the U21 category bearing in mind they are only age 15 and 16. In the MU21 category, there were a total of 30 runners and out of the top 9, 5 of them were Stafford Harriers. In the FU21 category there were a total of 21 runners with our young Harrier girls coming in 4th and 5th position. They really are a testament to the future of the club.

Junior Section Report for August 2018

August is traditionally a quiet time for races, due to people’s holiday commitments, however we are aware of a couple of events the Juniors have competed in.

19th August 2018

Leek 2 Mile Fun Run

Whilst his dad ran in the 10 mile race, Matthew Hilsdon ran in the Fun Run, finishing in a commendable 5th place. A big well done to Matthew!

Matthew also competed in the 5K Race for Life at his school finishing in 9th place out of the whole school! This was a great performance in an event that touches many people’s hearts.

Having recently ran the local Park Run it was pleasing to see some of our Juniors eagerly taking part in this event, which provides a great platform to measure their improvement over time. Well done guys, and keep up the great work!

Junior Attendance during Summer Holidays

Also worthy of note, is that during the six weeks school holiday, we have had on average 40 Juniors attend the Monday night session and around 10 on a Wednesday, which I believe shows their commitment and dedication, despite other distractions during the busy holiday period.

As expected, the Juniors monopolised the medal allocation so a massive well done to them and of course, all those who took part in the Games. All thoroughly enjoyed themselves, especially those who managed to beat the adults, and the after games party back at the Cricket Club! Thanks to all who organised and were involved with this event.

Harriers Fast & Furious (Ben Cook, Jake Oliver, Kian Arnott & Ben Deakin) came seventh in the Boys Team 64 years age group, which was a great effort.

In addition to the Junior Teams, we also had some Juniors running as part of family teams; Harley, Jess and Jenny Farrant and Isabelle and Harry Beckett, and George Hodkinson running in an adult team.

As always, it was a magnificent display from all of the Junior Harriers, who appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Well done to everyone who took part.

Midlands Counties Cross Country Championships, Wollaton Park, Nottingham

We had seven juniors running in this event, the course of which was laid out in the beautiful parkland area, passing the imposing old hall. Everyone seemed to enjoy the experience, despite the wet conditions, and ran very well in their races, in what was a very challenging field of some of the Midland’s best junior athletes.

Park Runs

As per previous months, a number of Juniors have been participating in these events, which are a great way over time, to help improve people’s performance over the same distance, on a weekly basis. Keep up the good work!
