Wednesday Night Fast Road Runs

Two years have passed since Phil Hilsdon’s Wednesday night fast road run group was set up and in that time it has brought on a number of the older Juniors and helped them transition into 10K races and beyond. Thanks to Phil for dedicating his time and commitment to this worthy cause.

Park Runs

November saw the third anniversary of the Cannock Chase Park Run, and over the last 3 years it has been really pleasing to see so many of the Juniors turn out early on a Saturday morning, keen to improve on their times, and of course, beat their parents and coaches. Well done guys, keep up the great work!

Wednesday, 16th & 23th October

Stafford Interschools, Cross Country Championships, Rowley Park & Stafford Grammar School

We had a number of Juniors taking part in these events, in which they ran representing their schools, rather than the Harriers. As always, it was really good to see the Juniors cheering on their fellow Harrier friends, as well as the other members of their school teams, which demonstrates the Harrier comradeship and team spirit. A big well done to all those who took part in these events.

Junior Section Report for September 2019

Sunday, 1st September

Spitfire Cosford 10K

Jake Oliver along with his Nan, was the only Junior to run in this event, which takes the runners partly around the parked aircraft on display and then a gruelling stretch out and back along the runway. Jake was the first Harrier back in a time of 41:09 and 31st place, which earnt him a PB. There were 1337 finishers. Well done Jake!

Wednesday, 11th September

Castlefields 5K Time Trials

This was the fourth of the planned time trial events for the Juniors over the summer period, in which we had 7 running, along with the adult improvers group. As in previous time trials, they are intended to monitor the Junior’s progress, and chart how they do over time, and offer support and coaching accordingly. These events place the Juniors in a good, strong position to start the cross country season, so well done to all that took part!

A special thanks to Chris Skellern and Ian Hodkinson for their continued encouragement and support, and to Karen Hilsdon and Claire Heath for helping with the token collection.

Finally it should be noted that over the last six months or so, our older Juniors – Saffron Latham, Chloe Burrows, George Hodkinson, Kian Arnett, Robbie Gorman, Ben Deakin, Ben Cook and Jake Oliver have moved into running as young adults in races. On behalf of the Junior Coaches I would like to express my thanks for their hard work, determination and commitment over the years in representing the Junior Harriers, and I hope they all continue to progress as they move into competing against the seniors. I think the Senior Harriers need to be watching out for these guys!

Junior Section Report for August 2019

August is traditionally a quiet time for races, due to people’s holiday commitments, however having recently ran the local Park Run it was pleasing to see some of our Juniors eagerly taking part in this event, which provides a great platform to measure their improvement over time. Well done guys, and keep up the fantastic work!

Junior Attendance during Summer Holidays

Also worthy of note, is that during the six weeks school holiday, we have had on average 30 Juniors attend the Monday night session and around 10 or so on a Wednesday, which I believe shows their commitment and dedication, despite other distractions during the busy holiday period.

Wednesday, 12th June

Showground 2 Mile Relays

We had five Junior teams running in this event which for the third year was held at the County Showground and organised by the Harriers. Unfortunately the weather conditions were against us resulting in a very wet, sodden and muddy course, however this did not appear to dampen the Junior’s enthusiasm and performances, and produced some very good times, and of course, enjoyed competing against and beating many of the seniors.

Harriers Boy Racers (Lucas Willson, Jack Heath, Finlay Broomhall and Ben Green) came ninth in the Boys Team 52 years age group, which was a great effort.

In addition to the Junior Teams, we also had Harry Beckett running as part of a family team; and some older Juniors, Kian Arnott, George Hodkinson, Ben Cook and Jake Oliver, running in senior teams.

As always, it was a magnificent display from all of the Junior Harriers, who appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Well done to everyone who took part.

Sunday, 16th June

Stone St Michael’s Junior Relays

We had 16 Juniors running as three teams in this local event, the teams comprised of five people, (except Team 2 which had two people in leg A), each running a distance of 2K alongside those athletes running in the main 10k race, which was a two lap course, and as always, the Juniors provided some very competitive performances. Well done all! Jack Heath, was the only Junior to compete in June’s handicap race, on what turned out to be a lovely summer’s evening on the Chase. Jack finished in 19th place with a net time of 37:57. Well done Jack!

Saturday, 29th June, Rowley Park

Harriers Summer Games

On a boiling hot summer’s day, we had 19 Juniors (shown in red below) competing against 14 adults in these games, split in to four groups, as follows.

Well done to those Juniors who won medals, as in previous years they stormed ahead of the adults in the medals tables! Amazing!

Asha Willson and Will Edgar each picked up the Junior Performance of the Day award for being recognised for putting in some fantastic effort and performances, and achieving some commendable results.

A massive well done to all of the Juniors and of course, all those who took part in the Games in what turned out to be difficult running conditions due to the heat. All thoroughly enjoyed themselves, especially those who managed to beat the adults, and those who attended the after games presentation and party back at the Perkins Club! Many thanks to all those who planned, organised and helped out at the event.

Mow Cop Killer Mile, Mow Cop

Having not competed in this challenging, but also intriguing race for some years, a small group of Harriers decided to run in this event, including Jake Oliver. The clue being in the race name – this course is simply 1 mile, but all up hill, some of which offers very steep inclines. Jake completed the climb in a time of 9:28, and was the first Harrier home. Well done Jake!

Continuing on from previous years, this was the first of several planned time trial events for the Juniors over the summer months, in which we had 11 run on this occasion, and who also ran with the seniors along the disused railway track. The event is intended to monitor the Junior’s progress, and chart how they do, over time, and offer support and coaching accordingly.
