Silver Trail Half Marathon

Saturday 23rd March 2019

Race Report Julie Nokes

One evening Nia was telling me about a trail half marathon Stone Master Marathoners had done last year in Wales, it sounded great and the very mention of red kites being fed as the race was finishing sold it to me and I thought I must go and give it a try!  ‘It’d be a nice day out if nothing else!’
So I did some research and entered the race along with Nia, Nikki Towle and Rebecca Southall from SMM and Glyn Pattinson from Cheadle Running Club. So with Emma Phillips and Craig Edwards SMM also going as tail runners we had a good group of us to enjoy our day trip!
Fast forward to March 2019, and having followed the Facebook updates from the event page we were all getting really excited, and a little nervous from not knowing exactly what to expect!  Once the hype of Stafford half marathon had died down it was time to hatch a plan of action (and of course check we had everything on the kit list)!
It was an early start for us all, the weather was looking good and on arrival we were welcomed by friendly marshals and race signs in both Welsh and English. The scenery was stunning, overlooking the lake and once out the van for a better look, it was clear we were in for a treat.
Over to the tent for registration and on the board were the names of the 150 entrants. I collected my number and saw Nia was not the only Nia on the start list, this was when I knew I had arrived in Wales! The drawstring goody bag had energy chews, reusable cup, an energy drink and the race t-shirt. We bumped into Emma eating a sausage bap who was so excited and got us all hyped up! It was back to the van to get kitted up and meet Glyn and Becky for a team photo!
The race briefing followed and then it was a walk up the hill for the start. Surrounded by what looked like many seasoned trail runners we were off! The first few miles were easy to run and I could definitely feel my legs were still somewhat weary post Stafford Half but it wasn’t going to stop me enjoying the event.
My feet and legs were quickly muddy/wet but it was all part of the fun. 3/4 miles into the race and we took a steep climb through the forest then out onto an open field with the most spectacular views. 5 miles in I stopped for a quick drink, energy chew and a little chat with the marshals.
As the race continued the terrain became more varied, lumpy grassland, boggy fields, shale paths, cattle grids, stiles, gates and woodland were all featured. Oh and a man running barefoot! The marshals were just wonderful, so encouraging and upbeat. The course was clearly marked so any worries we had about getting lost were quickly forgotten!
One of my favourite sections was running down through a stream and some quite technical trails then at 10.5 miles we entered a steep grassy field. I walked up the hill and couldn’t summon up any energy to run past the photographer. The field flattened out and I got going again knowing I didn’t have far to go!
The final push through what seemed almost pitch black woodland and steep climb for the last half a mile or so was tough going but wonderful, the views once again were incredible and hearing the noise from the finish area pushed me on! I managed to overtake a few runners here. A steep descent and into the finish! What time did I do?! It didn’t matter, it was great!
The sun was out and Glynn was there cheering me in to the finish. The atmosphere at the finish was just lovely. I had been poorly prior to the race and wasn’t sure if I would even run, so I was so delighted for getting though it! Emma was a tail runner and she was equally as happy as the rest of us as she finished. We didn’t see Craig as he was still out on course assisting a visually impaired runner.
The presentations took place and we were in awe of the winning times! Next we saw the red kites being fed over the lake so we all assumed our positions. (Ours was by Nikki’s van with a brew and a Jaffa cake). It was an amazing sight and Emma had been lucky enough to feed them herself the day before, a thank you gesture from the organisers.
We said thank you to the race organisers Karen and Ian before heading back with a full heart. This race was simply stunning, well organised and made us all remember why we run. We all have goals and PBs to beat but sometimes appreciating your surroundings and friendships through this wonderful sport is all that really matters.
To quote Emma Phillips ‘This race was not about times, pressure or conventional racing, it was simply about running for the soul’.

See you next year Silver Trail!

knighton 20

10th March 2019

Race report by Chris Elsley

Cold wintery weather greeted the 270 athletes who completed the Knighton 20 road race last Sunday.
The testing 20 mile course consists of three testing laps starting out from the Sports and Social Club with a grueling climb at the end of each lap.
11 Stafford Harriers runners were among the field and Phil Hilsdon was the first of them to complete the course, finishing in an excellent 6th place overall in a time of 2:07:46
Richard Crump followed in 71st in 2:33:08 with Ian Hodkinson a further four places back in 2:35:29. Spencer Holland also made the top 100 in 2:40:34 to take 93rd place.
Debbie McDermott was the first of the ladies contingent, finishing in 134th in 2:54:20 with Melonie Deakin next home in 107th in a time of 3:07:51.
Ed Smith finished 201st in 3:14:46 ahead of the trio of Joanne Oliver, Lindsey Foster and Gill Hodkinson who took 208-210th in 3:19:39.
Last but not least for the town club was Julie Nokes with another creditable performance, finishing 239th in 3:38:52.
The race was won by Nicholas Barry (Sale Harriers) in 1:53:39 more than two minutes ahead of his nearest rival while Lawley RCs Tracie Truman was the first lady home in 2:22:29.

Cambridge Half Marathon

Sunday 3rd March 2019

Race report by Mel Deakin

This is my favourite half, and I was very fortunate to get a place in the event this year. It is very popular and is the only event I know that gives priority to runners with a local postcode. Even with 9000 places there are very few left over for runners from outside the area. The event is very well run and seems to get better year on year. Great medal and packed goodie bag. You don’t get a t-shirt but there is plenty of apparel to buy. The course is flat and fast. It starts in the city and loops around the shops and sights before going out to Grantchester which is a bit more rural. Then back into the city, to the finish at Mid-Summer Common. This year it drizzled on and off all morning, but there was still plenty of support along much of the course. I would recommend this event to anyone, particularly if you are looking for a PB. I much prefer shorter distances, but it is the third time I have run at this event and I always love it and have got a PB every time. Fingers crossed I will be back next year.

Knype Pool 5 mile Race

Sunday 24th February 2019

Race Report by David Marsden

I’ve done this race several times and I’ve endured snow, ice, wind, rain and cold but I haven’t previously experienced it in bright sunshine and temperatures up to 14 degrees C. So today’s race which is an off-road, undulating event mainly around Knypersley Reservoir was really quite pleasant. After a couple of miles along the side of the reservoir, which is also described as the Head of the River Trent, there’s a reasonable climb through woodland to a narrow country lane. After a short distance on this lane we turned onto open fields and descended into woods and back to the track around the water. Another woodland climb was included before we returned to the waterside path and back to the finish.
I clocked the course as being just 4.6 miles in total, but it was enjoyable and challenging.

Practise run

Sunday 24th February 2019

Report Colin Mitchell

On a cold foggy morning, 34 of us meet at the Hockey and Cricket club for our annual Stafford Half practise run. The format was the same as previous years with two groups setting off. Strangly more in the faster group this year, so much so at one point we considered a single group. Water stations at 3.3mile and 6.6 miles. The sun started breaking through after Beaconside.

Thanks to the coaches for their work.

Photo’s at the water stations.

Rugeley 10 mile race

Sunday 17th February 2019

Race Report by Mel Deakin

I deliberately entered the Harriers Challenge and North Staffs Road Runners this year as I knew it would make me run some races that would take me out of my comfort zone and this is one of those. It is the most challenging 10 miler I know of, endless hills the most demanding being around mile 8 when runners are tired. It was great to see so many Harriers, and chatting before the start it was interesting as some clearly love this kind of race and devour the distance whereas it fills me with a sense of dread. Anyway, I had got myself to the start, despite joking I was off to the pub I was determined to run it and try to better my time from when I ran here in 2017.

We were soon on our way, the race starts on the dual carriageway in Brereton, and quickly turns off down lanes towards Longdon. Of course it wasn’t long before we hit a hill, I just dug in, gritted my teeth and thought this is the first of many, get on with it. Conditions were pretty good though, a bit windy in places, but perfect temperature. The lanes were dry and good for running. I got to half way and felt surprisingly okay, made better for keeping both Chris and Debs in sight in front of me. Sometimes looking at your watch can be demoralising and doing math in your head whilst running isn’t always accurate, but I thought I had a good chance of getting a PB although the worst hill was to come. It surely did come, I saw lots of people walking up the last, and some very enthusiastic marshals trying to keep us going. Antonio passed me here and as much as I tried to keep up with him I could not. The last mile or so is a welcome downhill stretch back to the school. Alas, I finished behind Chris and Debs who are also in NSRRA group M, but so pleased to beat my time from 2017 by a massive 7 minutes 55 seconds – don’t ask me how I did that as I just don’t know. Well done to all Harriers who raced here, some great results and performances across the board.

Next up in the Challenge is Cloud 9.

Thirty five years with the Harriers

By Graham Williams

I joined the Harriers 35 years ago this month. Whilst on holiday in Cornwall the previous July, a friend said he was going to run the London Marathon in 1984 and would I do it with him, I agreed and we both entered and got in. It was very different to today, there were only 15,000 runners.

When I joined the Harriers we met at St Leonards and had only two lady members. The Staffs Knot started and finished at St Leonards. The Shugborough Relays were originally organised by the County Officers Running Club, we took over from them when the club folded. My first race was the inaugural Stafford Half which started and finished at the County Showground. Because it was downhill, the first mile took about six minutes and the last a lot more! I finished in 1.35 and still have the photograph of me crossing the finish line wearing a long-sleeved striped rugby top, brief shorts and long Nike socks, which my mother bought me.

My friend Roy and I travelled to London for the marathon by train and stopped in a tatty B&B. We started on the red start behind the gates and took nearly fifteen minutes to reach the start line. This was before chip timing. The London Marathon first time is an amazing experience with the noise and support. My family drove up to support me, standing along the Mall. Unfortunately these days, because it has become so money-oriented few people will get the chance to run. The finish was on Westminster Bridge and the meeting place was Jubilee Gardens by County Hall. I finished in 4.24 but managed to get this down to 3.23 in Dublin in 1993. As my birthday is on April 26th I have run London three times on my birthday. The first time, Vernon Olivant, who unfortunately no longer with us, provided a cake on the train when we were coming home. The second time we had a Harriers party in the Victoria Hesperia hotel where we were stopping. The third time was on my seventieth birthday which was very emotional as most of my family came to watch.

As we did not get any sponsorship, unlike today, we organised long sponsored runs. These were the Staffordshire Way, the Shropshire Way and the Canal Ring. They were all 90-100 miles long. A minivan was used to ferry the runners. There was a morning and afternoon session. People would run in small groups for 4-7 miles before joining the minivan, swapping with the next group, having a rest then running again later. I vividly remember leaving Mow Cop at 5.30 for the Stafford Way run and a similar time from Ironbridge when we did the Shropshire Way.

I have had some wonderful holidays with the Harriers doing marathons in Dublin, Paris the Two Oceans in Cape Town (35 miles0, Vancouver and Sri Lanka. Nearly all our party including our wives ran in various races in Sri Lanka. I walked in Vancouver due to injury and just broke seven hours! I could not run in Cuba unfortunately, but some runners did the half and full marathon. Due to a change of date we missed the marathon in Vietnam and so did a 4K race along with thousands of local people starting and finishing at the local Botanical Gardens next to the zoo at 6.00am.

These days I don’t do marathons but have done many halves .in European cities including Prague, Luxembourg, Amsterdam, Berlin, Madrid, Lisbon and Majorca. Several Harriers went to Barcelona for the half marathon; unfortunately I was injured so just spectated. I also missed going to Florence, however we are going to Athens this year.

I have run with many accomplished runners including people who have won the Stafford 20 and the Stafford Half and others who have run 100 and 150 marathons and some have completed marathons in less than 2.40.

During my time with Stafford Harriers as Treasurer, I have worked with seven chairmen and some wonderful people and regard myself as lucky to still be running albeit slowly!
